Angola is a multiethnic country with 25.8 million inhabitants, who are members of various tribal groups, customs and traditions. The culture in the country reflects centuries of Portuguese rule in the form of the dominant Portuguese language and the Catholic Church. After a long struggle with the colonialists, independence was achieved in 1975 after the founding of the People’s Republic of Angola, a Marxist-Leninist one-party state supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba. Shortly afterwards, a civil war broke out between the ruling People’s Liberation Movement of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for Complete Independence of Angola (UNITA), supported by the United States and the apartheid Republic of South Africa, which lasted until 2002. a relatively stable unitary constituent republic. The earliest people who lived in this area were members of the Koisan hunting tribe. They were overwhelmingly displaced by the Bantu tribe during the Bantu migration, while a small number of Koisan tribes are still found in southern Angola. The geographical area of present-day Angola first came into contact with Europeans in the late 15th century. The Portuguese established their bases in 1483, where the Congo states of Ndonga and Lunda were located. The Congolese state stretched from present-day Gabon in the north to the Kwanza River in the south. In 1575, the Portuguese founded the Cabinda colony to transport slaves. Before the transfer of slaves across the Atlantic, slavery was practiced by many indigenous peoples in Africa. The Portuguese, gradually, in the 16th century occupied a narrow part of the coast with a series of wars and formed the Portuguese colonies of Angola. The Dutch occupied Luanda from 1641 to 1648, where they joined forces with the local population to defend themselves from the Portuguese. Portugal recaptured Luanda in 1648 and began the process of regaining lost territories. The treaty regulated relations with the Congo in 1649 and the kingdoms of Matamba and Ndong in 1656. The conquest of Pungo Adongao in 1671 was the last major Portuguese expansion, while attempts to capture Congo in 1670 and Matanbe in 1681 failed. Portugal expanded its colony beyond the colony of Benguela in the 18th century and began attempts to encircle other regions in the mid-19th century. This process led to several expansions until the 1880s. The colony was designated in 1951 as an overseas province, called Portuguese West Africa.
